At
the Lancaster University campus, a total of
4,426 new en-suite rooms are being constructed
in 3 to 6 storey residential blocks, together
with significant infrastructure and external
works. The works are being undertaken under
the aegis of Jarvis Construction (UK) Ltd
and works are staggered over a four-year period
with a phased handover to coincide with the
collegiate calendar..
QED Scaffolding have been appointed by Jarvis
Construction (UK) Ltd to undertake all of
the scaffolding requirements upon this high
profile and high prestige project. Crucial
to QED Scaffolding acquiring preferred bidder
status with Jarvis has been our ability to
work closely both with Jarvis and the many
package contractors engaged upon the project.
The
residential blocks are of pre-cast concrete
panel construction faced with stonework, rendered
blockwork and a traditional tiled roof. The
scaffold is therefore a key element of the
programme for the blocks.
Initially
a free standing scaffold is erected around
the building for the use of the pre-cast concrete
panel subcontractor during the installation
on a floor by floor basis of the panels. Hop
up brackets are affixed at the appropriate
heights to enable the joints between the panels
to be sealed.
The
next stage is the provision of a full lift
of hop ups at roof level to allow installation
of the roof timbers to commence. Concurrently,
lifts of hop ups are installed at the appropriate
heights for the use of the bricklayer/stonemason/blockwork
as work progresses up the building(s), the
transomes at each level to the scaffold are
then pushed forward to create a fully boarded
lit for the use of window fitters, etc.
With
up to a dozen individual residential blocks
under construction at any one way, the need
for scrupulous planning and detailed liaison
with both Jarvis and the multitude of specialist
trade package contractors is paramount to
the success of the overall project. It is
testament to our ability to meat these challenges
that we are one of a select few trade contractors
to whom Jarvis have entrusted all of their
requirements for that particular trade.
