The
Queen
Mary
Venture The
Queen
Mary
Venture
was a huge operation
undertook
by
us
which
promised
to
be
the
most
interesting
excavations
in
British
Maritime
history.
The
project
was
recorded
not
only
for
posterity,
but
also
as
a
project
that
used
the
latest
in
North
Sea
technology.
The
location
of
the
project
was
just
off
the
coast
of
Anglesey,
in
North
Wales. This is an area which is
a
notorious
graveyard
for
shipping
along
the
British coastline - demonstrated
by
the
requirement
of
two
very
large
lighthouses. |
|
In
a
first
for
UK
Maritime
technology,
it
was
planned
to
stage
the
diving
operations
from
a
land
base,
dispensing
with
the
perils
associated
with
a
diving
vessel,
avoiding
the
vagaries
of
the
tides
and
weather.
Permission
to
erect
the
scaffolding
was
granted
from
the
land
owner,
the R.S.P.B.
in
relation
to
nesting
birds
and
the
Crown
which
owns
cliffs
between
the
high
and
low
watermarks.
Instead
scaffolding,
designed
and
constructed
by Q.E.D.
Scaffolding,
was
positioned
down
the
face
of
the
cliff
with
a
base
that
was
established
on
the
land
above.
in
this
manner,
it
meant
that
the
excavation
of
the
seabed
close
to
the
cliff
was
rendered
far
less
hazardous
than
if
the
operation
was
to
be
carried
out
from
a
ship.
with
the
use
of
scaffolding
and
other
commercial
equipment
from Q.E.D.,
it
was
confidently
predicted
that
any
and
all
Gold
Bullion,
coins
and
other
artefacts
present
would
be
recovered.
